  • About: Simon Bates is the Appoint­ed Vice-Provost and Asso­ciate Vice-Pres­i­dent, Teach­ing and Learn­ing at Uni­ver­si­ty of British Colum­bia. In 2014 Simon cre­at­ed the attrib­ut­es of a 21st cen­tu­ry edu­ca­tor which were adopt­ed by eCam­pus Ontario for their Ontario Extend PD series.

  • About: “Teach­ing Teach­ing & Under­stand­ing Under­stand­ing” is a 19-minute award-win­ning short-film (sep­a­rat­ed into three part mini-videos) about teach­ing at uni­ver­si­ty and high­er-lev­el edu­ca­tion­al insti­tu­tions. It is based on the “Con­struc­tive Align­ment” the­o­ry devel­oped by Prof. John Big­gs. CONFESSIONS OF A CONVERTED LECTURER: ERIC MAZUR
  • About: Eric Mazur: “I thought I was a good teacher until I dis­cov­ered my stu­dents were just mem­o­riz­ing infor­ma­tion rather than learn­ing to under­stand the mate­r­i­al. Who was to blame? The stu­dents? The mate­r­i­al?
    • I will explain how I came to the ago­niz­ing con­clu­sion that the cul­prit was nei­ther of these. It was my teach­ing that caused stu­dents to fail! I will show how I have adjust­ed my approach to teach­ing and how it has improved my stu­dents’ per­for­mance sig­nif­i­cant­ly.”
    • Eric Mazur is the Balka­n­s­ki Pro­fes­sor of Physics and Applied Physics at Har­vard Uni­ver­si­ty. An inter­na­tion­al­ly rec­og­nized sci­en­tist and researcher, he leads a vig­or­ous research pro­gram in opti­cal physics and super­vis­es one of the largest research groups in the Physics Depart­ment at Har­vard Uni­ver­si­ty.

The Last Lecture: Achieving Your Childhood Dreams: RanDy Pausch
  • About: Carnegie Mel­lon Pro­fes­sor Randy Pausch (Oct. 23, 1960 — July 25, 2008) gave his last lec­ture at the uni­ver­si­ty Sept. 18, 2007, before a packed McCono­my Audi­to­ri­um months before his death. In his mov­ing pre­sen­ta­tion, “Real­ly Achiev­ing Your Child­hood Dreams,” Pausch talked about his lessons learned and gave advice to stu­dents on how to achieve their own career and per­son­al goals.
