Safer Campuses for Everyone Training — Employee Edition

The Sex­u­al­ized Vio­lence: Safer Cam­pus­es for Every­one — Employ­ee Edi­tion train­ing flows from the leg­is­la­tion that was passed in British Colum­bia in 2016. BCcam­pus took on the project to build this train­ing which was fund­ed by the Min­istry of Post-Sec­ondary Edu­ca­tion and Future Skills and is avail­able as a resource to all post-sec­ondary insti­tu­tions in BC.

The train­ing was designed to allow the inclu­sion of pol­i­cy, pro­ce­dures and sup­ports spe­cif­ic to each post-sec­ondary insti­tu­tion. There is a ver­sion for employ­ees and anoth­er for stu­dents.

Instructions on How to Enroll in the Tutorial
  1. Log in to Bright­space at https://mycourses.nic.bc.ca and on the main land­ing page look to the blue nav­i­ga­tion bar to see “Dis­cov­er” (DO NOT click on the Dis­cov­er tab in your My Cours­es wid­get as it only dis­plays cours­es you’ve already enrolled in)
  2. Look for “Sex­u­al­ized Vio­lence: Safer Cam­pus­es for Every­one — Employ­ee Edi­tion” or search for it in the search bar on the Dis­cov­er page
  3. Click on “Enroll in Course” to add this course to your cours­es. In the future it will be found under “Dis­cov­er” and “All” tab in your My Cours­es wid­get on the main Bright­space page.
  4. Click “Open Course”
  5. Progress through the mod­ules and take the quiz; you will receive a cer­tifi­cate when you score 100% on the quiz.
What Will You Learn as Part of This Training?

In the course of the train­ing, learn­ers will increase their knowl­edge about the types and impacts of sex­u­al vio­lence and to exam­ine some of the rea­sons why sex­u­al vio­lence hap­pens. They learn about the impor­tance of con­sent in all rela­tion­ships and how to safe­ly inter­vene to pre­vent sex­u­al vio­lence. As well, they learn about how to find sup­port for them­selves or how to sup­port some­one else who has expe­ri­enced sex­u­al vio­lence.

An Alternative to Training

Accord­ing to Sta­tis­tics Cana­da, 71% of Cana­di­an post-sec­ondary stu­dents expe­ri­enced unwant­ed sex­u­al­ized behav­ior in 2019. Fur­ther, accord­ing to the Cana­di­an Labour Con­gress, near­ly 50% of work­ers have expe­ri­enced sex­u­al harass­ment and/or sex­u­al vio­lence in 2018 and 2019. These sta­tis­tics high­light that this type of harm is all too com­mon in com­mu­ni­ties like ours, and we know that it is like­ly that many mem­bers of our com­mu­ni­ty have been per­son­al­ly impact­ed by sex­u­al vio­lence. Because of this real­i­ty, this train­ing might prove to be a dif­fi­cult expe­ri­ence for some mem­bers of our com­mu­ni­ty. If you are con­cerned about engag­ing in this train­ing, you can request to com­plete the train­ing require­ments in an alter­na­tive way by con­tact­ing the Man­ag­er, Human Resources. You will not be required to dis­close details of any per­son­al expe­ri­ences. We ask this request to be reserved for staff impact­ed by sex­u­al vio­lence and sex­u­al harass­ment, and/or his­to­ries of trau­ma, vio­lence, or harass­ment.
