Uncovering The Hidden Curriculum

  • UncovĀ­erĀ­ing the HidĀ­den CurĀ­ricuĀ­lum is a cross-instiĀ­tuĀ­tion, cross-secĀ­tor, and cross-disĀ­ciĀ­pliĀ­nary iniĀ­tiaĀ­tive that aims to supĀ­port a learner’s acaĀ­dĀ­eĀ­mĀ­ic, perĀ­sonĀ­al, and proĀ­fesĀ­sionĀ­al develĀ­opĀ­ment.
  • This webĀ­site includes varĀ­iĀ­ous skills-based conĀ­tent and resources that eduĀ­caĀ­tors can embed in their coursĀ­es.
  • UncovĀ­erĀ­ing the HidĀ­den CurĀ­ricuĀ­lum will supĀ­port stuĀ­dent menĀ­tal health, which was the iniĀ­tial motiĀ­vaĀ­tion for this project.
  • In addiĀ­tion, when eduĀ­caĀ­tors engage in activĀ­iĀ­ties to uncovĀ­er the hidĀ­den curĀ­ricuĀ­lum it humanĀ­izes learnĀ­ing and makes for more meanĀ­ingĀ­ful interĀ­acĀ­tions with stuĀ­dents.
  • UncovĀ­erĀ­ing the HidĀ­den CurĀ­ricuĀ­lum conĀ­sists of 54 skills/topics that are catĀ­eĀ­goĀ­rized into 5 domains: execĀ­uĀ­tive funcĀ­tion, comĀ­muĀ­niĀ­caĀ­tion, critĀ­iĀ­cal thinkĀ­ing, intra- and interĀ­perĀ­sonĀ­al, and social accountĀ­abilĀ­iĀ­ty.
    • Each skill/topic is orgaĀ­nized as a modĀ­ule that includes conĀ­tent and resources for both stuĀ­dents and eduĀ­caĀ­tors.
    • The conĀ­tent addressĀ­es why it is imporĀ­tant for stuĀ­dents to develĀ­op the skill and how it links with menĀ­tal health.
    • The resources include strateĀ­gies eduĀ­caĀ­tors can share with stuĀ­dents, tips for eduĀ­caĀ­tors when designĀ­ing and impleĀ­mentĀ­ing their coursĀ­es, and activĀ­iĀ­ties eduĀ­caĀ­tors can do with stuĀ­dents.
  • When navĀ­iĀ­gatĀ­ing the skills/topics, keep in mind that to uncovĀ­er them is to embed them into teachĀ­ing and learnĀ­ing spaces in explicĀ­it and meanĀ­ingĀ­ful ways. UncovĀ­erĀ­ing the HidĀ­den CurĀ­ricuĀ­lum supĀ­ports, and in some casĀ­es becomes part of, existĀ­ing course design and conĀ­tent. This process is a jourĀ­ney and any steps towards it demonĀ­strate a comĀ­mitĀ­ment and engageĀ­ment to stuĀ­dents that won’t go unnoĀ­ticed.
  • All conĀ­tent and resources relatĀ­ed to UncovĀ­erĀ­ing the HidĀ­den CurĀ­ricuĀ­lum are licensed as CreĀ­ative ComĀ­mons AttriĀ­buĀ­tion-NonĀ­ComĀ­merĀ­cial-ShareĀ­Alike.
